PERFORMANCE AGING
What is Performance Aging?
ANSWERED BY HANNA HORNER · UPDATED AUGUST 11, 2026
Most fitness marketing sells you a look. Performance Aging sells you a capability, and it measures whether you actually have it.
The difference in one sentence
Anti-aging asks how you can look like you used to. Performance Aging asks what you can still do, and then trains that list to get longer.
What it actually measures
A Performance Aging program tracks the qualities that decline first and cost the most when they go:
- Strength, especially in the legs and posterior chain, because getting off the floor and carrying your own load is the floor of independence.
- Power, meaning force produced quickly. Power fades faster than strength and it is what catches you when you trip.
- Aerobic capacity, usually estimated as VO2 max from a 5K time trial or a graded effort. It is one of the strongest fitness markers associated with long-term health outcomes.
- Grip and carry capacity, an easy proxy for total-body strength that also happens to be very practical.
- Mobility under load, not passive flexibility. Range you can control.
- Recovery, which is a trainable quality, not a fixed trait.
Why the framing changes the training
If the goal is appearance, the program drifts toward volume, deficits and punishment. If the goal is capability, the program drifts toward progressive load, quality movement, real aerobic work and enough food to recover. Those are two very different training weeks.
It also changes what a bad day means. On an appearance program a missed session is a moral failure. On a capability program it is a data point that gets folded into the next block.
How to start
Test where you are. A 5K time trial, a five rep max on a hinge and a press, a farmer carry, a dead hang. Write down the numbers. Those numbers are your baseline, and beating them is the entire game.
Then train three to six days a week with progressive strength, at least one honest aerobic session, and one session where the two collide. Log it, because the plan only adapts if it knows what happened.
Related questions
Is Performance Aging the same as anti-aging?
No. Anti-aging targets appearance and slowing visible change. Performance Aging targets capability and measures whether you can do more this year than last. The training that follows from each is very different.
What age is Performance Aging for?
Any age. It matters most from about 35 onward, when power and aerobic capacity start declining without deliberate training, but the approach is the same at 25 and 65. Only the starting loads change.
Do I need a gym for Performance Aging?
You need progressive resistance and somewhere to run, row, ski or ride. A full gym makes it easier. A barbell or a set of dumbbells and kettlebells plus open road covers most of it.
