How Much Protein Do You Actually Need After 40?
1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day, split across three to five meals. The split matters as much as the total.
1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day, split across three to five meals.
That is the current consensus range for active adults, and the "split across meals" part matters as much as the total. Loading it all into one dinner does not work the same way as spreading it out. Your body can only use so much protein for muscle building in a single sitting. The rest gets treated like any other calorie.
So the daily target everyone fixates on is only half the equation. Three eggs at breakfast, a real portion of protein at lunch, another at dinner. That pattern beats a huge protein shake once a day and toast the rest of the time, even if the total grams match.
This is where most people over 40 are quietly losing ground. Not from eating too little protein overall. From eating it in the wrong shape. One meal a day carrying the whole number, with long gaps in between where the body has nothing to work with.
Fix the distribution before you obsess over the total.
